The Definitive Blues Collection (Definitive Collections) [Paperback] Review

This is purely a book of blues songs. This books contains well known as well as some more obscure blues pieces. The arrangements range from very basic to very complete. None of the arrangements provide extended"blues solos" or blues riffs"....(this sort of improvisationwill be up to you). The arrangements do however give you complete songs, with key, time-signature, and tempo markings. It also includes chords aswell as single note melodies AND it inclues bass lines.
NOTE:This isNOT a "how to" book.If you want blues theory and/or instructionlook elsewhere. This is a song book.

U2 -- The Joshua Tree: Piano/Vocal/Guitar [Sheet music] Review

As the title in my review reads, This book has all the cords of each song in the cd but it doesn't have the complete lyrics so you need to get them elsewhere... Not usefull to read and play.

Spanish translation: El libro es suficientemente bueno. Tiene todas las canciones del CD con sus acordes y notas en pentagrama pero presenta a las letras de las mismas en forma abreviada e incompleta. No es útil para leer e interpretar en simultáneo.

Joe Pass Chord Solos: For Guitar, Vibes & All Keyboard Instruments [Paperback] Review

These are not "Chord Melodies". Rather they are chord improvisations over the changes of six tunes: Misty, Billie Joe, a Blues in Bb, Watch What Happens, Sunny and The Days of Wine and Roses.
Very dense chord arrangements showing different harmonic possibilities with the basic changes. I recorded these as I learnedthem, so I could listen to them to really absorb the material.
Joe gives no harmonic analysis at all, so it is up to the reader to figure out the theory, and boy, there's lots of it.
I'm a professional jazz guitarist and teacher....playing nearly forty years, and I still review these and pick chord licks that I like, transpose them to other keys, positions and strings, analyze the voice leading, chord substitutions, etc. I've had this book for years, and lots of it has slowly seeped into my playing. I'll play a piece, pick a chord lick that I like (like any one of them), and then try to apply it to my improvisations in other tunes.
In my opinion, for advanced players, this is one of the best books out there to dig into some really lush and melodic chord playing. I found it tough reading....and I'm a pretty advanced player. But I have worked through most of the major guitar books out there and this one is one of my mainstays.
While I'm here, I'll also recommend:
Fusion - Joe Diorio
Joe Pass on Guitar
Howard Roberts Guitar Manual Chord Melody
For players new to jazz and not so advanced, a standard book is
Mickey Baker Jazz Guitar Volume 1.

The Beatles 1 - Recorded Version Guitar [Paperback] Review

The previous reviews shown here have nothing to do with this book. They appear to be for "The Beatles Paperback Songbook", which does look to be small and not necessarily accurate.
"The Beatles 1 - Recorded Version Guitar" appears to be exactly what it says: transriptions of the recorded versions. My guitar teacher has spent a couple of sessions breaking down "Day Tripper" off of the CD for me. What this professional musician came up with for this song is almost verbatim what is published in this book. So now I have it written out in a form that I can actually read (and correct as needed). It is a full-size (8.5x11) music book and I look forward to working my way through it.

The Rolling Stones- Let It Bleed (Piano/Vocal Guitar) (Alfred's Classic Album Editions) [Paperback] Review

This book is great because it has all the songs from the classic Let it Bleed Album.I was suprised that there were very basic mistakes, for example the introduction states that Brian Jones was replaced by Mick Taylor, an American, after he died.Wha?Mick Taylor is English. Also, the slide guitar solo/interlude for Monkey Man is not correct. There are missing parts to other songs, such as the picking work for Country Honk.I give this 3 stars since this book, like the tab book for Beggars Banquet from Alfred publishing, will give you enough information to play the songs in a similar fashion to the recorded versions.

Best of Creedence Clearwater Revival (Piano / Vocal / Chords) [Paperback] Review

I love this book!I have been a fan of CCR for a long time, and trying to play Fogerty's guitar parts just from internet tabs and/or by ear, is extremely difficult. The Guitar Recorded Versions tab book is easy to read, has the all of the lyrics and multiple guitar parts all together. There are chord diagrams at the beginning of every song as well.I have been playing for maybe a year now, and this is my favorite tab book because of the readability, quality of print, layout of the information...and of course, it's Creedence.

For the money, it's hard to beat any of the Guitar Recorded Versions tab books from Hal Leonard, and the Best of CCR is no different.Highly recommended!
