The Well-Tempered Clavier: 48 Preludes and Fugues, Vol. 2 [Paperback] Review

I appreciate what the Kalmus press has done to give helpful footnotes for the ornamentation and the score layout is very clean and spaced well. A good "easy" read, that is relatively easy...if you know the pieces in this book you'll know what I'm talking about!

Puccini for Easy Piano: 25 Soaring Selections from 8 Operas (Universal JV Classical) [Paperback] Review

This 85-pg., 9" X 12" music book is printed clearly on good stock. It rests and
opens easily on the music stand. It contains 25 selections from 8 Puccini
operas including "O mio babbino caro" from "Gianni Schicchi."The book starts
off with 4 pgs. of opera synopses.Next, while the arrangements are not the
simplest I have seen, they are easy enough for a pianist with marginal skill.

I am one of the many who was taught piano in his youth, and then played with
less and less frequency over the years. In my old age most of my once- moderately-
efficient music skill has evaporated. But with this relatively easy book of
Puccini and a few other such books, I am regaining some of what I once knew.
At the same time I am able to play in a manner so as not to send listeners out
of the room. For me the book is worth the price.

The Harold Arlen Songbook (P/V/G Composer Collection) [Paperback] Review

Even if he never wrote anything else, Harold Arlen earned a stellar position in the Great American Songbook for writing "Over the Rainbow", as well as the other songs from "The Wizard of Oz".But he wrote so many more wonderful songs, ranging from the happiest and most light-hearted melodies to songs of nearly-operatic power.Sopranos, in particular, should look at this collection, which contains "Blues in the Night", "I Had Myself a True Love", and "I Wonder What Became of Me".The arrangements in this book are quite full, although a professional accompanist could make more of them, and the keys are singable. It is one of the staples of my popular music library.Harold Arlen's work is often associated with Judy Garland, but I think Eileen Farrell is actually the absolute best interpreter of his songs.Look for her CDs titled "Eileen Farrell Sings Harold Arlen" and "I Got a Right to Sing the Blues".They will blow you away, and maybe change your perception of what great singing can be.
