Copland Conducts Copland: Fanfare / Appalachian [Original recording remastered] Review

There are few composers who capture the American spirit as much as Aaron Copland; Jewish; born in Brooklyn; educated to some extent in Paris; and gay-nobody brings alive the colors and sounds of the Old West and American country life quite like him. Indeed almost every soundtrack to an old Western movie is a re-write of "Rodeo" or "Billy the Kid" Suite.

Copland's "Appalacian Spring" is an American "Pastorale", painting the deep green hills of America's heartland. But the real gems here are the "Old American Songs" which Copland arranges in a way that maintain the integrity and simplicity of each miniature while making them undoubtedly "Coplanesque". The delicate handling of these tunes by the expressive bass-baritone William Warfield makes for perfection, especially on the hymns "Simple Gifts" and "At the River".

Jerry Lee Lewis- Last Man Standing- Songbook [Paperback] Review

I previously ordered "Jerry Lee Lewis: Greatest Hits" songbook and liked it so much that I decided to go ahead and get the "Last Man Standing" songbook, even though I don't yet have the album and am not as familiar with the songs (since most were popularized by other artists). I was not disappointed with this book at all - it's a first-rate addition to my sheet music collection and, now, when I play one of the songs, people say, "WOW!" So, I'm glad to be able to share these songs in Jerry Lee's style with friends and family.
I recommend this book for the intermediate to advanced pianist.

West Side Story (Vocal Score) [Paperback] Review

If you're looking for a faithful translation from the full score, this is the one. This score is based on Bernstein latest revision as reflected in the Carreras Te Kanawa recording (1985).

But be warned, this score is only for upper-intermediate/advanced pianist, classically trained. It's not a fakebook, it's not a simplified/reduced piano score for casual use. The arrangement gives two alternatives for playing some part of the song, and you can choose to play it the hard way or the easier way (which is still rather difficult). The hard way is of course the most faithful to the orchestral score.

For example, the dance part in "America" can be played by using single notes of the left hands rather than using full chord, which is great if you're trying to cope with the tempo. The arrangement for the slow pieces such as "one hand one heart", "maria", "tonight", and "somewhere" is really beautiful.

Tip: Listen to the "west side story" conducted by Bernstein himself to get a grasp of the tempo, dynamics and phrasing.

I am always afraid to buy popular music books online, because it seems that often times either they are too simple or too adapted to sound like the vocal melody and not the music melody.This book is a great blend of the piano and the vocal melodies.It is true to the actual recordings of the song so it doesn't sound hollow.For better or for worse, the vocal melody is infused into the two staff transcription (instead of adding a third staff).I think it was done well, keeping enough of the actual piano, yet bringing in the vocal melody so that it doesn't require singing to sound complete.I am very satisfied with this book!
