Etudes For the Piano: Complete (Alfred Masterwork Edition) [Plastic Comb] Review

This edition is awesome. It has a plastic spiral that lets the book open and lay flat, and in comparison to books without it this feature is definitely better.

The measures are numbered and they are spaced evenly throughout the pages. There is no crowding of notes and footnotes are kept at the bottom. The font and note color is big and black too.

Overall this takes the cake because Chopin's Etudes are so difficult the edition must be as clear to understand as possible.

I only wish that Alfred publishing would make more complete editions like this of other artists such as Beethoven and Debussy. In any case this edition is superior to the Schirmer editons.

Yes, This book has a lot of songs from the 80's and 90's. Not current ones. But that being said there are a lot of songs thatbring me back to when I first accepted the Lord as my Savior. I am excited to learn them and share them with my church family and friends. I must say that Amazon has been a pleasure to deal with.

The Complete Cabaret Collection - Author's Edition (Easy Piano Vocal Selections) [Paperback] Review

As you might guess - for the title above - I'm a huge, I mean, HUGE, 'Cabaret' fan and collector. So, of course, I found this book delightful, but - taking the risk of making a fool out of myself - I must warn to anyone who doesn't know it that these are the scores of the songs. I boughtit thinking that it was something else - I don't know exactly what -, and Idon't regret it, but it's not what I expected it to be... Thanks God I havea pianist friend so he can play it for me :-)Anyway, it's a must-have forevery 'Cabaret-collector' out there.

These are some nice arrangements of popular hits.There aren't words, but the melodies are still audible.This book is great for background/dinner music.Includes lovely pieces like Michael Buble's 'Home' and Rascal Flatts' 'Bless the Broken Road.'The arrangements are for late intermediate/early advanced pianists.

Sarah McLachlan - Surfacing (Piano/Vocal/Guitar Artist Songbook) [Paperback] Review

I own both of Sarah McLachlan's piano songbooks ("Sarah McLachlan Collection" and "Surfacing") and this is my favourite of the two. I've been playing piano for fourteen years and I've been a fan of Sarah for just as long. "Surfacing" features piano transcriptions that sound almost exactly like the CD. "Building a Mystery" captures the shimmering guitar intro and saucy feel, "I Love You" is a haunting piano solo that trails off into silence, "Sweet Surrender" was my least favourite....that haunting guitar intro just didn't cross over to piano as well. "Adia" sounds just like the recording, as does "Angel," and "Last Dance" performs beautifully (a musical saw played the melody on "Surfacing"). "Full of Grace" was featured on the "Moll Flanders" soundtrack a number of years back and is very delicate; "Witness" becomes a powerful song on piano with its striking, rhythmic bass chords that underscore the melody. "Black and White" was another song that I routinely skip over--somehow the piano just doesn't do it justice. This is the best transcription of popular music that I've ever had the pleasure to play--it is at times haunting, assertive, lovesick and playful. If you are a Sarah McLachlan fan you'll also want to check out the "Sarah McLachlan Songbook" that features songs from "Touch" and "Solace" along with "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy."

Jazz Improvisation 4: Contemporary Piano Styles [Paperback] Review

This is the last in a series of four volumes created between 1959 and 1965 by jazz pianist and instructor John Mehegan. The complete set is of the utmost historical importance for anyone with a serious interest in jazz piano. Before Mehegan, no other author had succeeded in unlocking themysteries of jazz piano and then communicating them to a mass audience in aclear and cogent manner.
Volume 4's "contemporary" stylesinclude such jazz giants as Oscar Peterson, Horace Silver and Bill Evans.In Mehegan's view, these three were the primary architects of modern jazzpiano.
At the very beginning of the book is a note-for-note transcriptionof Bill Evans' classic "Peri's Scope." Serious jazz pianostudents will want to memorize or "cop" this performance in itsentirety, since it encompasses so many of Evans' stylistic innovationswithin one comparatively short space.
The "meat and potatoes"foundation of this volume is the series of chord-like clusters Meheganrefers to as "A" and "B" voicings. One set of voicingsderives from Chopin, the other from Ravel. For accompaniment or"comping," these are played in the right hand with single bassnotes or "root seven" intervals played in the left. For soloing,they are played in the left hand.
This volume goes on to describemelodies voiced in "block" chords as developed by pianist GeorgeShearing, and then outlines a solo piano architecture based on the A and Bvoicings [arguably prescient, anticipating the solo piano renaissance thatoccurred during the '80s].
The book's primary flaw -- one which persiststhroughout the serie -- is its unfortunate allegiance to the concept of"figured bass" used within traditional music theory instruction.Indeed, there is a conspicuous overall effort throughout the series to"suck up" to academia, but this is a forgivable byproduct of anage when traditional academia persisted in viewing jazz as something toovulgar and intellectually impovershed to merit acceptance within hallowedacademic environs. -- Cortland Kirkeby
