The Well-Tempered Clavier: 48 Preludes and Fugues, Vol. 2 [Paperback] Review

I appreciate what the Kalmus press has done to give helpful footnotes for the ornamentation and the score layout is very clean and spaced well. A good "easy" read, that is relatively easy...if you know the pieces in this book you'll know what I'm talking about!

Best Christmas Music (Big Note Songbook) [Paperback] Review

This is one step up from Easy Play, where the book gives you 1 note melodies for the right hand only and easy chords. This book gives mostly easy chords and a line for each hand.Occasionally there are two notes for one hand instead of only one. Some songs have either one sharp or one flat.I mainly bought this book because it has the Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire), but I enjoy many of the songs.

The Complete Preludes and Etudes for Pianoforte Solo [Paperback] Review

Scriabin was a contemporary of Rachmaninoff, in fact, he studied under the same teacher. Like Rachmaninoff, he was a bridge composer between the late Romantic and the 20th Century period. He was far more modern, in fact, than Rachmaninoff, though his early works were profoundly influenced by Chopin (Rachmaninoff less so--he was influenced by Chopin but also Tchaikovsky.)
Despite the fact both composers shared Russian heritage and a love of the piano, Rachmaninoff did not admire Scriabin's works, saying he had gone off in a wrong direction. While I love Rachmaninoff's piano works intensely, I have to say that he was really wrong about Scriabin. This is some of the most gorgeous, introspective, Impressionist piano music ever written.
Scriabin had a tragically short life, yet he composed quite a number of etudes, preludes, sonatas and other short piano works. Dover has done a huge favor by putting all the preludes and etudes into a single volume. There is enough material here for years of exploration into the music of a piano master. The edition is a compact volume that manages to sit well on the piano music stand, and the music print is clear and easy to read.

Complete Song Cycles (English and German Edition) [Paperback] Review

This is the Dover edition of Franz Schubert's two song cycles on the poetry of Wilhelm Mueller -- Die Schoene Muellerin and Die Winterreise -- plus the collection of songs known as Schwanengesang, which is not a truecycle but rather a group of songs written by Schubert near the end of hisshort life (d. 1828), packaged as cycle posthumously by his publisher.Ifyou are interested in art song, this plus a few other volumes -- forinstance Schubert's Goethe Lieder, also available from Dover -- are anessential aid to enjoyment and understanding. One down side is that thisis the usual Dover repackaging of an older source, and as such lacks thingssuch as measure numbers and Deutsch catalogue numbers that would be usefulto have. For the money, however, this is an essential value. Englishtranslations of the poems are included in the back of the volume.
