Complete Song Cycles (English and German Edition) [Paperback] Review

Complete Song Cycles [Paperback]This is the Dover edition of Franz Schubert's two song cycles on the poetry of Wilhelm Mueller -- Die Schoene Muellerin and Die Winterreise -- plus the collection of songs known as Schwanengesang, which is not a truecycle but rather a group of songs written by Schubert near the end of hisshort life (d. 1828), packaged as cycle posthumously by his publisher.Ifyou are interested in art song, this plus a few other volumes -- forinstance Schubert's Goethe Lieder, also available from Dover -- are anessential aid to enjoyment and understanding. One down side is that thisis the usual Dover repackaging of an older source, and as such lacks thingssuch as measure numbers and Deutsch catalogue numbers that would be usefulto have. For the money, however, this is an essential value. Englishtranslations of the poems are included in the back of the volume.

Favorite Songs of the Nineties [Paperback] Review

Favorite Songs of the Nineties [Paperback]The phenomenon of "hit" songs did not really come into the American consciousness until the 1890's."After The Ball," included in this collection, established a benchmark that all songs that followed were measured against.

Before the 90's, the American music publishing industry was scattered and ill defined. Hit songs were disconnected and generally regional, save for a few from early American popular song composers such as Stephen Foster and Henry Clay Work. It was with the establishment of a central publishing industry, Tin Pan Alley, and the growth of communication media and later the phonograph and radio that fostered the idea of nation wide and even world wide hit songs.

In the music of this period -- the 1890s -- we see a marriage of art and commercialism, which paints a picture not of how life actually WAS, but how people wished life COULD BE.What resulted was a body of work that is enduring, with memorable melodies and lyrics.

From the melancholy nostalgia of "After the Ball" to the humor of "Waiting at the Church" to the melodrama of "Those Wedding Bells Shall Not Ring Out!," we get a wonderful and varied picture of life in those days.Women whose lives were ruined by men, men whose lives were ruined by women, and pure patriotism -- it's all here. This is the period that set the stage for the US commercial music industry.

The music in this collection is beautifully reproduced, including the cover artwork.

I used a few of these songs for my senior recital as a vocal performance major a few years ago.It was a nice change from the usual opera arias and German and French art songs.

Definitely worth a look if you're interested in the history of the American popular music industry.

Product Description:
This is a collection of 12 songs primarily for the classical singer to perform in recital with piano accompaniment. The songs are in a medium voice range, andcould probably be performed by any voice type (soprano, mezzo-soprano, etc.), although mezzo-sopranos will find them most suitable. The music has quite a theatrical flair, although it is in a contemporary classical style. Distinctive repertoire with a twist. Arnold Weinstein's texts are as pithy as Bolcom's settings of them. Contents: Over the Piano * Fur (Murray the Furrier) * He Tipped the Waiter * Waitin * Song of Black Max (as told by de Kooning boys) * Amor * Places to Live * Toothbrush Time * Surprise! * The Actor * Oh Close the Curtain * George.

Complete Songs for Voice and Piano [Unabridged] [Paperback] Review

Complete Songs for Voice and Piano [Paperback]This is a wonderful collection for all admirers of Rachmaninov. While the 14 or so songs without opus numbers are not included in this edition, the majority of Rachmaninov songs are and they form a strong part of his creative output (spanning nearly 20 years).
An affordable and easily obtainable book, it is good not only for general study and performance, but also for comparison and study of pianist Earl Wild's brilliant transcriptions of thirteen of the songs (and Arcadi Volodos' two song transcriptions).
