Classic Rock - Keyboard Recorded Versions [Paperback] Review

Classic Rock - Keyboard Recorded Versions [Paperback]This book is somewhat similar to Hal Leonard's other classic rock keyboard transcription book, but features a few songs not found in the other one. Although the other reviewer for some reason seemed disappointed by finding all the keyboard parts written out, that is actually the beauty of this book. It's not another PVG book full of cheesy piano arrangements. It's the real keyboard parts, and all of them. Guitarists have been enjoying accurate rock transcriptions for years now, so it's great to see the same kind of material being made available for keyboard. Keep 'em coming!

The Artistry of Bill Evans Vol.2 [Paperback] Review

The Artistry of Bill Evans Vol.2 [Paperback]This is actually Volume 2 (1995), and contains EIGHT (not eighty) transcriptions of Bill Evans piano parts off the recordings. This collection is better than Vol. 1.First, vol. 1 did not transcribe thecomping behind the bass solos.Second, vol. 1 focused on the late Fantasy& early Warner Bros. recordings (1970s), while this collection rangesfrom the first trio on Riverside, some Verve solo and trio sides, and solosides from Fantasy. Gripe: when transcribing trio recordings, is it toomuch to ask that the bass part also be transcribed? Songs: "AutumnLeaves" (mono version), "Spring is Here," and "What isThis Thing Called Love" from PORTRAIT IN JAZZ; "Here's That RainyDay" from ALONE; "I Should Care" and "Make SomeoneHappy" from TOWN HALL; "The Touch of Your Lips" and"What Kind of Fool am I" from ALONE (AGAIN). No extras (vol. 1had a short essay and photos).

Thomas "Fats" Waller : The Great Solos, 1929-1937 [Paperback] Review

Thomas 'Fats' Waller : The Great Solos, 1929-1937 [Paperback]Simply put - this book is a monumental endeavor and no less of a tribute to "Fats". After long hours on end trying to pick out these fabulous solos myself with my all-too-imperfect musical ear, this work is adream come true. If only more musicians of this calibre would pick up thetorch as well and transcribe other solos for "Fats"(unfortunately, his marvelous rendition of "Tea for Two" is notincluded here), as well as other pianists (Art Tatum, for one)! Theaccuracy in transcription here is astonishing. Two copies are recommended, because you will be wearing the first copy out in no time!

The Benny Green Collection: Piano Solo (Artist Transcriptions) [Paperback] Review

The Benny Green Collection: Piano Solo [Paperback]I've been waiting for a benny green book to come out and I finally purchased this about a year or two ago. It has very accurate transcriptions of some of his pieces and is great to have. Once you work the pieces up you can actually play along to his albums (he plays pretty fast though) - most are written in the original key.

I'd recommend this book to any benny green fan-- of course. Also, for any jazz pianists - it's great to go through his book and really see how green puts the pieces together and try to incorporate your style with the pieces.

And for those classically trained pianist (like me), you will appreciate the structure and genius of his compositions and will be amazed at the sound you will be making.

I'd rate this as advanced or advanced intermediate.

Bill Evans 4: Piano Solo (Richmond Music ¯ Folios) (Richmond Music ¯ Folios) [Paperback] Review

Bill Evans 4: Piano Solo [Paperback]This is a superb volume of Bill Evans transcriptions. These are very accurate and therefore difficult to read and play. Only four tunes are in the book which is only 36 pages long.

The tunes are:
One For Helen
Time Remembered
Turn Out The Stars
Waltz For Debby

The albums that the transcriptions are taken from are supplied so you can buy and hear Bill Evans original performance. My favourite is the stunning version of Waltz for Debby (from 'The Bill Evans Album'). On this version Evans states the tune on accoustic Piano and later on plays solos on electric and then accoustic Pianos (not that you can tell this from the sheet music)!

You also need to bare in mind that Evans mostly recorded with a Trio so once the solo starts the left hand part tends to be the classic comping left hand which unless played very well sounds a bit empty without a bass player.
