There are a few programmatic morsels of interest."March" (#1) has a trumpet imitation, two religious numbers (#2, #18) imitate church harmony, and "Hunting Song" (#19) has a horn imitation."The Fair" (#8) starts forte but ends on a diminuendo, probably to simulate the fair winding down.
There are also some curiosities for the music theory buff.In Slumber Song (#6), the composer withholds any subdominant chords until the coda--a trick which he probably learned from Mozart or Beethoven. Be sure to compare the chromatically descending passages in #11 (ms. 39-43) and #20 (ms. 5-8).
